Imaging Center Receives ICAEL Accreditation

May, 20, 2011 – Minor & James Medical, a multi-specialty physician group located in Seattle, Bellevue and Mercer Island, was granted accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL) for adult transthoracic and adult stress. This accreditation is a testament to their provision of high-quality patient care and superior diagnostic evaluations.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the number one cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. Someone has a heart attack every 34 seconds and, each minute, someone in the U.S. will die from a heart disease-related event. Echocardiograms are able to detect and help manage heart disease.
Echocardiography is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure which uses sound waves to view the size, shape and motion of the heart. It is used to detect many heart conditions including damage, defects, abnormal growths, blood clots, valve conditions, and changes in structure and blood flow.
The ICAEL was created in response to the evolving needs of the echocardiography community and the general public. The accreditation process was designed to both evaluate all aspects of current laboratory processes, which includes a close assessment of laboratory operations and actual case studies, and provide valuable feedback in how they can meet the standards set by the ICAEL on providing high-quality patient care. The process involves a confidential peer review by ICAEL reviewers, comprised of both physicians and sonographers. Voluntary application for accreditation by an echocardiographic laboratory is a testament to their commitment to quality care.
