Women's Health Screenings

Posted on: 09/07/2011

Did you know?
Gynecological cancers—uterine, cervical or ovarian—can be subtle, providing few, if any, symptoms. That’s why screening tests are so important: because when gynecological cancer is caught early, it can be more easily treated and often cured. Screening tests—the pap smear, the rectovaginal pelvic exam, and the transvaginal ultrasound—offer very little, if any, discomfort, and can often be accommodated in a single appointment. Besides screening for any potential cancers, these tests also provide an important baseline, critical in assessing future results.

Are you at risk for a gynecological cancer?
You may be at risk for a gynecological cancer if you have one or more of the following risk factors or symptoms:

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Are over 50
  • Have had yourself, or have a family history of ovarian, uterine, cervical, breast and colorectal cancers
  • Have taken or are taking HRT, especially in post-menopause years
  • Have pain in the pelvic, abdominal region, or lower back
  • Feel bloated all the time
  • Become full quickly when eating
  • Notice a change in your bathroom habits, including constipation, diarrhea, or an increased urgency to urinate.
  • Notice a change in your vulva, including itching, a rash, or a change in color

What can you do?
